One of my New Year’s rituals is to write a letter of gratitude to the universe. I have found this action to be enormously powerful. I first thank the universe for everything — the joys and challenges — from the previous year. I then write another letter in anticipation of the coming year — thanking the universe for all of the gifts that are yet to come. For me, this is a perfect way to give thanks for the previous year and to dream about the coming year. I love reading my past letters and am humbled by how many dreams have been realized, often in the most unexpected ways. There are also dreams that have not come true, projects that have not been finished, and detours on my journey. But something about looking at the whole bit from a broader perspective helps me to see the lesson even in the failures. Although each day brings a new beginning, there is something magical about the beginning of a new year. It makes people bold. Dreams are bigger. Visions expand. The soul broadens. I don’t make New Year’s resolutions, but I do take the last few weeks of the previous year and the first few weeks of the new year to dream. What are you dreaming about? Is 2011 the year to turn those dreams into reality? What small step can you take today?
